As Ugandans, we chose polygamy as one of the acceptable forms of marriage practiced by persons who contract Islamic and customary marriages. Under Islamic marriage, a man can have up to four wives for those who have ability but the Holy Quran obliges the polygamous husband to do justice between the spouses.
In our African setting, the position of man is central especially during trying moments like war and disasters. The gender roles of a man include protecting and giving assurance to members of his household. This duty is rooted in our tradition and religions with Islam referring to men as protectors of women.
With the present lockdown, families in polygamous relationships are disproportionately affected. Majority of women and children in polygamous relationships feel neglected as a result of their husbands being locked down in one household. Whereas one may argue that polygamy is choice, it is a choice to men but not women since there is no requirement for consent of the exiting wife before adding another wife nor is non-disclosure of an existing marriage to the prospective a vitiating factor to the new the relationship.
The government through the national and local government COVID19 task force programs should give special attention to polygamous families in all programs including distribution of relief items. If possible, people with multiple families especially in the same district should have been given a special pass. Saving families from breaking is an equally essential service whether in covid19 situation or not.
That said, the Islamic principles of equity and justice to all the families fully applies under the Covid19. Though men in polygamous relationships are strongly encouraged to adhere to the guidelines against Covid19, they should strive to ensure that justice is done to all families despite the trying times
