Let us Utilize the Peace Day to Preach Peace.
The International Day of Peace is celebrated globally on the 21st September,2021. This year’s Peace Day is being celebrated under the theme: “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world.”
Peace is a cornerstone of our Constitutional democracy as a country. The preamble to the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda re-echoes our troubled history that is marred by constitutional and political instability. In essence, the Constitution recognizes that peace is cornerstone to constitutional governance.
The media has been awash with reports of machete wielding murderers especially in Masaka region. Many innocent lives have been lost and there is growing fear amongst Ugandans. Unanimous letters threatening to harm people have been written to communities in various parts of the country which has greatly disrupted peace.
Though some arrests have been made, our laws are to the effect that guilt of an accused person can only be established by a competent court upon trial. The government should therefore expedite investigations so that Ugandans can see justice being done and get assurance that peace will be restored.
Rule of law, good governance and development are all determinant on existence of peace. All religions and cultures put peace at the centre and emphasize peace as a virtue for any believer. As a God-fearing nation, lets utilize the Peace Day to pray and preach peace.
May peace be upon you All!
